Week 2 and 3 took a little bit of an unexpected turn when we ending up having an entire week of weather in the 70’s. We had only planned on getting the framing and the deck done, but with the amazing weather we also were able to get the pergola complete! So unlike other past ORC’s I have done, I am somehow ahead of schedule!
DISCLAIMER: I am going to say that this isn’t going to include any directions on how we built this. Matt spent a lot of time researching, watching youtube videos, and doing his research. Everyone has different spaces, different ground that are working with, if it’s attached to a home/garage, etc that so many variables will change. I will include what we needed to do this and the videos we found most helpful.
WHAT WE NEEDED
Overall size: 16×12 floating deck
•Severe Weather 1x6x12 Wood Pressure Treated Lumber (top of deck)
We also used this tool when putting in our deck screws which hides the screws and helps prevent cracking and splitting. I love that you cannot see all the screws!
I absolutely cannot recommend Toja Grid enough! I was so nervous for this part, but this ended up being the easiest part of the entire process. I went with Toja after a lot of research because I loved that it was a kit and the only thing I needed to purchase was the wood.
We laid out the grids and the wood onto the deck and made our game plan. Toja has so many helpful videos on their website that I definitely recommend going through and watching some of them beforehand. We had a friend who has a Toja pergola so it was nice to be able to have their help and prior experience. But, I just want to say, it’s easy, and you are going to really enjoy the process!!
Wood Used: 4X4X8 Pressure Treated
WHAT IS NEXT:
At this point we are going with what the weather is going to give us. This is what still needs done over the next 5 weeks:
- Completion of furniture delivery
- Finding outdoor curtains and the best way to hang them
- Building front step
- Adding a native garden bed to the right side near walkway
- Pergola top
- Electrician to add outlet off garage and possibly install fan?
- Finalize planters and decor
- Stain? Probably will have to wait.
- Install outdoor speakers and movie screen
